Five injured after shooting in Connecticut mall, search on for suspect, say police

A gunman shot and wounded 5 folks at a Connecticut mall on Tuesday (May 27, 2025), prompting an evacuation and a large police response, and officers say they’re nonetheless looking for the suspect.

Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo mentioned officers responded to the Brass Mill Center for experiences of a disturbance at round 4:40 p.m. He mentioned all victims have been being handled at native hospitals, although he declined to elaborate on the extent of their accidents.

Mr Spagnolo mentioned police imagine the shooter is a person in his 20s who used a semiautomatic pistol. He mentioned the suspect is aware of the victims and that the shooting was preceded by a dispute that shortly escalated.

โ€œWe do not believe this was a random act of violence,โ€ Mr Spagnolo mentioned at a briefing outdoors the mall, including that there isn’t a additional risk to the general public.

He credited patrons and mall employees for sheltering in place and protecting secure throughout the shooting.

โ€œI think they mitigated a lot of what could have been a really bad incident here,โ€ Mr Spagnolo mentioned. โ€œThese acts occur. Unfortunately itโ€™s the society we live in at time. But we canโ€™t let it get us down.โ€

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont mentioned state police will likely be aiding with the investigation.

โ€œOur hearts break for the Waterbury community, the victims, and their families who have been impacted by this incident,โ€ the Democrat mentioned in a press release.

The Brass Mill Center is situated off Interstate 84 in Waterbury, about 50km southwest of Hartford, the state capital.
