Sensex, Nifty drop nearly 1% as West Asia conflict, surging oil prices rattle stock markets

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty prolonged their southward journey in early commerce on Friday (March 13, 2026), tumbling nearly 1 per cent, as the continued battle in West Asia and surging oil prices proceed to spoil traders’ sentiment.

Heavy promoting in international markets, persistent overseas fund outflows and weak spot within the rupee additionally added to the bearish pattern.

The 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 708.38 factors or 0.93% to 75,326.04 in early commerce. The 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 222.05 factors or 0.93% to 23,417.10.

Power Grid, Hindustan Unilever, ITC and Bajaj Finserv had been among the many gainers.

Brent crude, the worldwide oil benchmark, traded 0.07% up at $100.5 per barrel.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s benchmark Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai’s SSE Composite index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index had been buying and selling decrease.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities value ₹7,049.87 crore on Thursday (March 12), in response to change knowledge. Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) nevertheless, purchased shares value ₹7,449.77 crore.

“With the FIIs persisting with their sustained promoting technique, even large-cap blue-chips are underneath strain,” VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, said.

On Thursday (March 12), the Sensex tanked 829.29 points or 1.08% to settle at 76,034.42. Similarly, the Nifty fell by 227.70 points or 0.95% to close at 23,639.15.
