Assam is ready to vote for the 126-member Assembly on Thursday (April 9, 2026), with most seats slated for a direct contest between the BJP-led NDA and the opposition coalition led by the Congress.

The BJP is eyeing a third straight term in energy in these elections, whereas the Congress is trying to wrest the State from the place it was ousted in 2016.

A complete of 722 candidates, together with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi, and AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, are within the fray.

Polling shall be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout 31,490 polling stations in 35 districts. A complete of two.50 crore individuals, together with 1.25 crore girls and 318 from the third gender, are eligible to vote.
