When designer Vikram Goyal speaks of his work, he typically brings up three anchors: up to date design, handmade craft, and tales drawn from India. Those concepts come collectively in his newest exhibition in Chennai, the place his manufacturers Vikram Goyal Studio, recognized for its sculptural furnishings; and Viya, his label of on a regular basis objects, come collectively.

“I want visitors to experience the breadth and depth of India’s cultural heritage as told through craft and design,” he says. The presentation brings collectively Vikram Goyal Studio’s furnishings and panels made utilizing repoussĂ© (a way by which designs are hammered into steel sheets from the reverse aspect to create raised aid); alongside Viya’s artisanal way of life objects in steel, cane, textiles, and comfortable furnishings.

Among the highlights from Vikram Goyal Studio are the deity panel of Lord Balaji, a cupboard with peacock motifs, and the dreamscape espresso desk. “I love this 17th-Century Rajput manuscript called the Book of Dreams. Each miniature painting depicts different talismans or elements of good fortune. Bringing those elements into my furniture pieces was joy,” Vikram says, referring to the desk. These are complemented by Viya, the life-style label, which brings the identical consideration to materials and story into on a regular basis objects akin to comfortable furnishings, brass and metalware, cane furnishings, block-printed textiles and lighting.

Each piece at Vikram Goyal Studio begins as an idea developed collaboratively between designers and artisans. “We have a large number of designers and artisans. When we ideate, we make wooden samples, then metal samples. Once approved, we make a larger prototype and then the final piece,” Vikram explains. Traditional strategies akin to hollowed joinery or pietra dura inlay (a way of becoming colored stones into steel or marble to type detailed patterns) are mixed with experimentation in scale and end.

Vikram has an extended affiliation with Chennai, relationship again to his school days, and work with purchasers within the metropolis. He has designed interiors for personal properties right here and offered his e book Shringara of Shrinathji at the Boat Club and Madras Club, cultivating a familiarity with its cultural panorama. “Chennai is a real bastion of tradition and culture,” he says. “Many people here have a great appreciation of craft and design, and I’ve been fortunate to see how well they respond to work that blends contemporary form with Indian narratives.”

Next month, Vikram will current a sequence of animal-inspired sculptures at an exhibition in Paris. The works proceed his exploration of type, craft, and narrative. “We are always experimenting with scale and material, whether it’s a large sculpture or a functional object,” he says. The present is co-curated by Preethi Krishna, Ranvir Shah, Sharan Apparao, Soumya Keshavan, Vikram Phadke, and Vikram himself.

The Vikram Goyal Studio and Viya showcase will likely be on view at The Folly, Amethyst, from 22 to 25 September.
