Brazilian Presidential Candidates Clash in Final Debate Prior to Run-off Election

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro clashed over economic policy, public spending, and security on Friday during their final televised debate ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes presidential run-off election.
Broadcast live from Rio de Janeiro on TV Globo, the debate brought together the incumbent leader and his conservative rival just two days before voters head to the polls. The encounter followed an initial round of voting on October 4, in which Flavio Bolsonaro—the son of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro—finished first with 47 percent of the vote, narrowly ahead of Lula’s 45 percent.
A survey published on Thursday by the Datafolha institute indicated that the two candidates were tied with 50 percent support each, setting the stage for a fiercely contested finish. Both contenders are scheduled to join supporters in the streets of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in their final campaign efforts before Sunday’s vote.
During Friday’s encounter, the candidates questioned each other extensively on Brazil’s economy, infrastructure, and regional development. Lula challenged Flavio Bolsonaro’s stated intention to implement a severe reduction in public spending akin to the fiscal approach adopted by Argentine President Javier Milei.
Flavio Bolsonaro responded by defending the comparison, stating that he would have a similar task because Lula was leaving the country bankrupt. Furthermore, Flavio Bolsonaro accused Lula of permitting organised crime to expand, driving families into debt, and failing to address the rising cost of living. He also stated that he would classify paramilitary groups as “narcoterrorists.”
The debate featured several tense personal exchanges. Lula characterized his opponent as a vigilante, citing allegations linking Flavio Bolsonaro to paramilitary groups in Rio de Janeiro. During another segment, Flavio Bolsonaro used a pejorative nickname referencing an accident from Lula’s past as a metalworker. Following a demand for an apology from the 80-year-old incumbent, Bolsonaro retracted the remark.
The discussion also touched on legal controversies when Flavio Bolsonaro faced an exchange with the mother of a five-year-old child killed in a shootout involving a police officer whom the candidate had previously represented as a legal attorney. Bolsonaro stated during the broadcast that he did not believe his former client was guilty.
