The high-stakes ballot on October 25 follows a tightly contested first-round vote held on October 4, in which Bolsonaro secured 47 percent of the vote compared with just over 45 percent for Lula. Because no candidate won an absolute majority, the election advanced to a second-round run-off. Voting opens at 8am and closes at 5pm local time, with official election authorities expected to announce the winner within hours of polls closing.

The election carries profound institutional significance for South America’s largest democracy, pitching the incumbent leftist leader against the conservative challenger, who is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Lula, who is seeking an unprecedented fourth term in office and turns 81 in days, has campaigned on expanding social policies, pointing to his party’s constitutional amendment to reduce the six-week work week and promising free public transport on weekends.

Meanwhile, Flavio Bolsonaro has focused on maintaining the momentum from his first-round lead while consolidating support from conservative parties that failed to advance to the run-off. The campaign has centered heavily on the economy, public security, corruption, and growing voter anxieties regarding crime and the cost of living.

According to pre-election polling, the race remains exceptionally tight, with Bolsonaro holding a slight lead among voters even as Lula has steadily gained ground in recent weeks. Both candidates concluded their campaign efforts following a final televised debate on Friday night.

While voting in Brazil is mandatory, legal penalties for non-participation involve only a nominal fine. Election officials expect the vast electorate to determine the outcome by Saturday evening.
