(*30*)Attacked, 65-year-old battles jackal for 30 minutes, strangles it with sari

BHOPAL: Attacked by a jackal, a 65-year-old Dalit girl in MP’s Shivpuri district held her nerves and the canine’s jaws for 30 minutes, and eventually managed to strangle the animal with her sari. She then collapsed from exhaustion and blood loss, waking up in hospital hours later with 18 chew wounds.Surajia Bai Jatav, a widow and small farmer of Barkhadi village, was discovered unconscious in her discipline late Monday and brought to hospital by villagers. She had gone to her discipline round 5 pm to chop fodder. As she bent to raise a bundle of grass close to a culvert, a jackal pounced upon her, biting her on the legs and fingers.“I thought I was going to die,” she stated from the hospital mattress. Alone and bleeding, she grabbed the jackal’s jaws and held it down, at the same time as it stored biting her. After an agonising 25-odd minutes, weak and shedding blood, Surajia tore a protracted strip from her sari, made a loop and slipped it across the jackal’s neck. As the animal lunged once more, she pulled the fabric tight and held it utilizing all her energy till the jackal stopped transferring. Then, she fell unconscious beside it.“We feared the worst until she opened her eyes well past midnight,” stated a relative.“She is stable, on anti-rabies injections, and should recover in about a week,” stated a physician.
