GORAKHPUR — A 33-year-old Sashastra Seema Bal jawan died from a gunshot wound while on duty at the Khanuwa Border Outpost along the India-Nepal border in Maharajganj district. The incident occurred around 1.40 am during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. According to police, fellow personnel rushed to the scene after hearing a gunshot and discovered the jawan critically injured. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The jawan was posted at the border outpost under the SSB’s 66th Battalion. Nautanwa circle officer Basant Singh stated that local police dispatched a team to the location immediately after receiving information about the death. ‘The body has been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway,’ Singh said. Police and SSB authorities have launched investigations into the incident, and the service rifle allegedly involved has been secured for examination. Officials have also notified the family of the deceased. Preliminary findings suggest the jawan may have been under emotional distress following the death of his elder brother approximately two and a half months ago. He had returned to duty on October 3 after taking leave, though authorities noted that the exact circumstances remain unestablished. Following the incident, senior security personnel visited the site, including SSB DIG Deepak Barnwal, 43rd Battalion Commandant Ujjwal Dutta, and deputy commandants Apoorva Anand and Amit Kumar Singh.
