Opposition launches nationwide campaign against Chief Election Commissioner over voter list allegations

The opposition has launched preparations for an extended, aggressive nationwide campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, signaling that the protests will not end in the short term.
Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi instructed Congress general secretaries and state presidents that the agitation will be a continuous, hard-hitting campaign rather than a brief protest. This directive was followed on Tuesday by a march from Parliament to the Election Commission, featuring a sit-in at Akashवाणी Bhavan that sharpened the momentum of the movement.
The protests stem from allegations of discrepancies in voter lists. The opposition first raised the issue publicly on August 7, 2025, when Gandhi highlighted examples from Maharashtra, Haryana, and Karnataka through the media. Momentum intensified following reports regarding names being cut from the electoral rolls in West Bengal through Special Intensive Revision (SIR) procedures and subsequent Bharatiya Janata Party victories, which deepened voter skepticism regarding electoral fairness.
Approximately a week ago, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc announced a multi-month campaign against alleged voter list irregularities. Following this, Congress announced a one-month grassroots campaign starting Monday aimed at restoring deleted names to voter rolls through the SIR process. The recent march from Parliament to the Election Commission demonstrated opposition unity, bolstered by the presence of the Biju Janata Dal.
Strategists note that opposition unity remains their primary strength, pointing out that the government was unable to fracture this alignment during the monsoon session of Parliament. If Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, political strategists anticipate significant disruptions during the upcoming winter session alongside an escalation of the aggressive campaign.
To broaden the outreach, the INDIA bloc has scheduled five major rallies nationwide. Organizers believe the united and aggressive stance adopted by opposition parties will complicate the government’s defense, particularly as general voters remain uneasy over the SIR process.
