Aligarh Muslim University replaces proctor amid ongoing student agitation

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration has replaced its proctor following an 18-day student agitation demanding the restoration of the students’ union elections.
On the 19th day of the ongoing protests and a hunger strike on campus, the university appointed Prof. Mohd Nafees Ahmed Ansari from the Department of Political Science as the new proctor. He replaces Prof. Mohammad Naved Khan.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon approved Professor Ansari’s appointment on behalf of the executive council, exercising powers under Section 19(3) of the AMU Act, 1920, and University Rule-12. His appointment is effective immediately for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. He will hold the additional charge of proctor alongside his existing responsibilities.
Professor Ansari joined AMU as a lecturer in 1994, became a reader in 2003, and was promoted to professor in 2009. The student demonstrations, marked by protests and a hunger strike, centered on the persistent demand for conducting students’ union elections on the campus.
