Russian Authorities Detain Suspected Teenager Following US Intelligence Warning in Moscow

MOSCOW — Russian security authorities have detained an unidentified teenager suspected of planning an attack at a popular public park in Moscow, following a security tip-off provided by the United States.
According to the Federal Security Service (FSB) via the Interfax news agency, the US intelligence warning helped security forces identify and apprehend the Russian citizen. The operation centered on the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve in southern Moscow, which was temporarily closed on Saturday after the US embassy issued an urgent security alert warning of a credible threat of a mass casualty event.
The incident highlights a rare instance of security cooperation between Washington and Moscow despite deep-seated geopolitical tensions stemming from Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. Similar intelligence sharing occurred in March 2024, when the US warned Moscow of a potential strike prior to a concert hall attack by an ISIL affiliate that left more than 140 people dead.
Following Saturday’s alert, the US embassy urged citizens to avoid the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve area and confirmed that the US government was coordinating with Russian authorities on the response.
The FSB stated that the detained teenager had shared photos on TikTok wearing a balaclava and tactical gear while holding what appeared to be an automatic weapon. According to security officials, the suspect posted images taken at the museum reserve accompanied by the caption, “I found a place.”
A subsequent search of the suspect’s residence uncovered the clothing and tactical accessories featured in the online posts, the FSB reported. Investigators also examined the teenager’s mobile phone, which reportedly contained search histories related to terrorist attacks and mass killings, alongside a subscription to a neo-Nazi Telegram channel.
Despite diplomatic strains, Russian security officials acknowledged the foreign intelligence input. “We are grateful to the American side for providing the information,” the FSB stated.
Russia’s Investigative Committee is currently reviewing the evidence to determine formal legal action against the suspect.
