The demonstration was organised by “People Against SIR,” a recently formed alliance comprising students, farmers, and civil society groups. The march was called to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, press for the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, and call for the restoration of democracy. According to reports by the Hindustan Times, leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party were invited to join the procession from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara in Connaught Place toward Jantar Mantar.

Amid heightened security concerns surrounding the agitation, official sources said the Union home ministry extended the deployment of 273 Central Armed Police Forces companies across the national capital until October 31. According to PTI, the extension was approved following a specific request from the Delhi Police due to the anticipated risk of flash protests.

The traffic restrictions and diversions came into effect at 1 pm on Friday and remained scheduled through 5 pm. Motorists were advised by authorities to avoid key arterial stretches and potential bottleneck points, including Connaught Place, Parliament Street, Jantar Mantar, Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, Astha Kunj Park, Nehru Place, and adjoining roadways.

“People Against SIR” emerged as a coalition grouping only a week prior to the march. A similar extension of paramilitary forces had earlier been sanctioned in mid-October.
