NEW DELHI — Jio Platforms, India’s largest telecommunications company backed by Meta and Google, is set to debut on the stock market on Wednesday with a 30,213 crore rupee initial public offering. The offering marks the largest IPO in Indian history and represents the first major public listing by the Reliance group in over two decades.

The public float comes as analysts and industry experts point to a potential turning point in India’s telecommunications sector, which has long been characterized by ultra-low mobile data tariffs. According to Nitya Shah, co-founder of Kamayakya Wealth Management, Jio’s era of using aggressively low rates as a weapon to capture market share is nearing its end. Rating agency Moody’s noted that the stock market listing will likely increase operational transparency for the firm, which is controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s wealthiest individual.

Founded in 2016, Jio upended the Indian telecom market by introducing dirt-cheap mobile data services that catalyzed widespread digital adoption. Critics have previously alleged that the company’s deep-pockets strategy ignited a price war that forced numerous competing operators out of business, reducing the country’s once-crowded market of 17 telecom firms down to just three major players. By 2026, Jio expanded its user base to approximately 55.3 million mobile subscribers, capturing more than 50 percent of India’s wireless broadband market and over 40 percent of fixed broadband. Brokerage firm MK Global described the enterprise as “India’s digital engine,” noting that its network carries roughly 60 percent of the nation’s total wireless data traffic and houses the largest base of 5G customers outside China.

Following the initial application window opening on October 21, the public offering drew bids exceeding available shares within hours. Under the terms of the listing, company promoters will trim their stake by approximately three percent. Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal stated in a client note that future corporate growth will heavily hinge on increasing average revenue per user (ARPU), a shift that market watchers suggest could lead to higher mobile bills for consumers while potentially benefiting rival operator Vodafone Idea.

The market debut also follows recent high-profile commentary surrounding the company’s competitive footprint. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk previously referred to Mukesh Ambani as India’s “real boss” and suggested that Jio sought to block his satellite internet company, Starlink, from entering the domestic market. Reliance rejected those allegations, stating publicly that it welcomes competition from Musk. Meanwhile, Kranti Bathini of Mumbai-based WealthMills Securities observed that the wider Reliance conglomerate has historically delivered consistent average annual returns of about 30 percent over three decades.
