Preliminary accounts from police and the state government indicate that heavy rain prompted crowds waiting outside to push toward the pandal for shelter. A public-address announcement simultaneously added to the commotion, causing people to fall and triggering a fatal crush. Authorities have detained several puja committee members and private security personnel as investigations into the exact sequence of events continue.

The disaster highlights longstanding vulnerabilities at religious gatherings in India and developing nations. According to a 2014 report by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), religious venues account for the majority of crowd-related disasters, where compressive asphyxia historically stands as the leading cause of death.

India has witnessed several large-scale crowd disasters over the past decades. Past incidents include the August 2003 Nashik Kumbh, which claimed the lives of 29 pilgrims, and the January 2005 Kalubai Yatra stampede at Mandhardevi in Wai, Maharashtra, where 293 people died according to an inquiry headed by Justice Rajan Kochar.

Responsibility for the Kolkata incident has yet to be officially established as local authorities and investigators work to determine accountability.
